This is a fantastic upload. I was fascinated with computer-based notation - wrote a notation program in BBC BASIC for my GCSE project lol. And blown away by Sibelius on the Archimedes in early 90s although didn't get my own copy till about a decade later.

I've been using Finale since I was in middle school when I got a copy of Finale 3.0 on a set of floppy disks. I am not devastated by Finale's passing because, honestly, it has really failed to adapt and change over the years. The software was remained relatively the same since, what, 2010? Earlier? Today, there's no app for tablets, there is no touch screen support, there is no longer any video playback for film scoring (and the reWire introduced in 2014 was garbage and eventually removed), and from year to year they barely changed a thing and expected people to upgrade once they stopped supporting the previous version and it was rendered useless by an operating system upgrade. I did get a lot out of Finale but I'm ready to move on to something more modern so good riddance.

Wow...nostalgic feels AND post-traumatic flashbacks! It amazes me how this promo makes using Finale appear to be easy and painless. No mention of the madness of cascading menus, the inability to find basic notational controls, and the crashing... ALWAYS with the crashing... When I was working toward a M.Mus years ago, I was at a school that Coda used as a "beta site". And of course, that meant that all of us in composition were going to be using Finale in addition to the usual dots-n-lines. Now, I'd enjoyed working with Composer a couple of years previously. It could be a little tedious to use, but you got decent enough results. So I'd already had some software scoring under my belt when I encountered the DIABOLICAL NIGHTMMmm...uh, Finale. I've been through a lot in my life that's left me scarred, like many other people. But UNlike many other people, one of those scars looks strangely like the Coda Music logo. Even so, I could tell that there was a hint of new possibilities there, so I got a tech loan and put together my own system, figuring that I could straighten out some of the creases with some better hardware specing. And going with a Mac IIcx did help...somewhat. So I'd done a massive amount of work in Finale 1.something, and my NEW rig was set for Finale 2.0x. So in went the floppies annnnnnnd... Yep. It wants to make changes to the files to make them 2.0 compliant. Makes sense. Clicked yes, then the screen displayed some...THING that bore a resemblance to my sketch transcription, albeit if it had been entered in by a dozen spider monkeys on meth and cheap gin. It took a few HOURS in the pre-Internet days to sus out the issues, aided primarily by the Boston Area Yellow Pages. Or really, just a manual that was the SIZE OF the Boston Area Yellow Pages. In the end, the only thing that Finale made easy for me was to immediately start planning out how to replace it with ANYTHING that would behave as if I was actually in control of it. These days, I use Ableton Live. It does things in ways that make musical sense. It doesn't make its own decisions. And it's incredibly STABLE, which took Finale several iterations to reach. And I rarely if ever have to do six or seven levels of menu-diving just to get at a particular function. That, basically, is what I expect out of ANY creative tool...that it stays in its lane and stays 100% under MY control, no matter what sort of task I throw at it. And no, Live doesn't exactly do notation, although there are some Max tricks that can allow it. Even so, I don't exactly think I'm missing out on anything by not having a "proper" scoring package. If I need to write something out, I can whip out a pad of manuscript and a couple of black Pilot V7s and get a usable result by hand in the time it would take to set up a new file in most any scoring software that I know of. So, yeah, I know there's people who've made careers off of Finale. That's cool...it works for you and vice-versa. But in rapid-fire situations when the creative juices are flowing, it proved to be far more of a hindrance than a useful tool. So you'll excuse me if I'm dancing a jig over the finale of Finale; we can do better and have DONE better than it was capable of. Musescore, f'rinstance...

I make my living as a Finale copyist and have been using it since version 1. This news has been devastating. Not sure how I’ll proceed. Don’t know yet what the publishing house I work for plans on doing. I do know Sibelius as well and use it when needed but much prefer Finale. At 70 years old I’m not feeling especially anxious to start learning Dorico which is a whole other paradigm.

I still have this videotape. I only watched it twice, but I couldn’t forget that stupid sax melody, and Phil Farrand stating how he “believes in a Master Architect”. And how about that state-of-the-art redraw speed at 15:50! What‘s most interesting to me about this 36 years later is the focus on connecting playing and scoring, trying to make it automatic and effortless … which it certainly still is not. Almost everyone has used Finale to manually write and publish scores. And dozens of companies are still trying to do what this video talks about.

I have a problem. When I append the scores in Sibelius, the name for the next score, is taken over by the name of the first score that has the other scores appended to it. Is this meant to happen here? Is there someway around this without having to go and re-type each title in without while hiding the wildcard name for each new piece,. for the new added piece of music? Thanks if you have any suggestions.

I would like both Pro Tools and Sibelius to develop an articulation management system that would be seamless in both applications. This could be the next step from copying and pasting midi between both platforms. If this happens, I dream of having one comprehensive music environment that would truly be the industry standard.
